Kristoffer To's Trio for flute, clarinet and violin received its first performance at 'Avant Music Night' presented by Avant Music Group Association of Hong Kong (AMGA) in Hong Kong on 28 April 2015.
Trio was co-commissioned by Avant Music Group Association of Hong Kong and the HKADC, and will be performed by Yuk Ying Chan (flute), Longman Mak (clarinet) and Alan Li (violin).
This work is dependent on the delicate compounding, and interweaving, of elements that have their own trajectory - with each element needing to both breathe independently, and interact collectively with the group. Whilst writing the Trio I became fascinated by the way in which certain gestures would give a different musical effect when 'lean on' a little, or extended. Breathing is the subject in the central section of the piece: we hear a number of inhalations and exhalations and thus to create space. In fact, the piece as a whole is an exploration of ideas of geature, silence, and space, the way in which the three instruments interact through the music. At times, the three speak in conjunction or move together; at others, they seem to be distantly separated, calling from afar.
